Titanium dioxide TiO2 is an additive (E171) which is used as a colorant in the food or cosmetics industry to obtain brighter colors or filter out UV rays.
In a recently published study (see here) the authors have found possible carcinogenic effects of this substance, especially in form of nanoparticles. Although E171 has not been banned in Switzerland, some distributors and manufacturers such as Migros and Chocolat Frey have decided to stop supplying products containing TiO2. In Europe, France has completely banned the use of TiO2 since 1 January 2020 (for more information, click here).
X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) is a fast measurement method with easy sample preparation without acid digestion for the determination of TiO2 in food or cosmetic samples (typical range from 0.01 wt% to 1 wt% TiO2).
For smaller laboratories we offer the NEX QC from Rigaku, a compact, flexible and easily transportable solution:

For lower detection limits or for standardless analysis without the need to calibrate the instrument, we recommend the Rigaku NEX DE or NEX DE VS with collimator for direct analysis of samples (e.g. candy or pills) without the need to grind the samples:
