New Portable Aethalometer® Magee Model AE43

Magee Scientific Aethalometer® model AE43 - NEW Portable Black Carbon monitor

The Magee Scientific Aethalometer® model AE43 is the brand NEW ‘portable’ Black Carbon (BC) monitor. Vertical profiling, emission testing, health effects research, mobile mapping, and field measurements at remote locations are all made easier by the features of the AE43.

KEY FEATURES

LIGHT-WEIGHT DESIGN for PORTABILITY (almost half the size and weight of the rack mount Aethalometer®)

OPTIONAL EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY for “OFF-GRID” monitoring applications

ADVANCED GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE for REAL-TIME DATA CHARTING

DUALSPOTTM – PATENTED TECHNOLOGY

REAL-TIME SOURCE APPORTIONMENT

RUGGED and RELIABLE

Measurement principle

The Magee Scientific Aethalometer® measurement principle is based upon the absorption of light by the aerosol sample, while continuously collecting on a filter. The filter tape advances automatically when a pre-set loading limit is reached, permitting the instrument to operate without attention. Depending on aerosol concentration levels, each roll of filter tape will last from one to several months of operation.

Sample collection and analysis is performed on two filter spots simultaneously at different flow rates. Mathematical analysis of patented DUALSPOTTM of the data eliminates the “Filter Loading Effect” and provides continuously-compensated data in real time.

Analysis is performed at seven optical wavelengths from the UV (370 nm) to the IR (950 nm). The spectral behavior of optical absorption by diesel exhaust emissions is different from that of smoke from biomass burning. Analysis of the spectral patterns from the 7-wavelength data allows for a real-time separation of ‘traffic’ and ‘biomass’ emissions. This allows for a speciation of the aerosol sources and a determination of their origins.

Light-weight design with external 12 V power supply (available optionally) for portability is offering operation up to 15 hours. Additionally, we offer a lightweight waterproof, crushproof and dustproof transit case for field transportation. Optional external battery pack enables “off-grid” monitoring applications, i.e. Mobile and Stationary monitoring, Vertical profiling, Vehicle and Engine emissions, Polution mapping and identification, Public Health

Real-time data determination and visualization

The Magee Scientific Aethalometer® Model AE43 displays the most relevant data (BC @ all wavelengths, %Biomass burning) for instant monitoring and reporting. It can display charts of BC data (from fossil fuel, or from wood burning) relative to wind speed and direction to provide instantaneous reporting of impacts due to extreme events such as wildfires.

General Black Carbon Informaiton:

BC "BlackCarbon" is used in many areas for the assessment of environmental pollution, in the report "Soot pollution in Switzerland measurements within the framework of the NABEL measurement report 2013" the introduction for the soot measurement is given:

For various reasons, the collection of reliable, comprehensive and long-term data on soot pollution in Switzerland is important for assessing air quality and for planning and monitoring the success of air pollution control measures:
- Soot is a carcinogen (diesel soot was classified as a carcinogen by the WHO Commission IARC in 2012), so the soot load must therefore be reduced to a tolerable level in accordance with the minimization ban. The Swiss Federal Commission for Air Hygiene (EKL) currently estimates the population-weighted mean value of soot pollution (in the form of elemental carbon, EC) at 1 μg/m3 . In order to ensure the protection of the population, a reduction to a value of 0.1 μg/m3 is necessary [EKL, 2013].
- Carbon black absorbs light and thus has an influence on the earth's radiation budget and thus on the climate. A reduction in soot pollution is therefore also important in connection with climate protection.
